Question 1

What is the Perec Test?

Accepted Answer

The Perec Test is a framework for identifying films that embody creative constraint. Named in the spirit of Georges Perec — the French Oulipo writer who wrote an entire novel without the letter "e" — a film passes the Perec Test if it runs 105 minutes or less, is a standalone work (not part of a franchise, series, or planned continuation), and has a closed ending that resolves its central question (ambiguity is allowed, but the story must feel complete on its own terms).

Question 2

What are the criteria for passing the Perec Test?

Accepted Answer

Three criteria: (1) Runtime — 105 minutes (1h45) or less. (2) Standalone — conceived as a complete work, not part of a franchise, series, cinematic universe, or planned continuation. (3) Closed ending — resolves its central narrative, thematic, or formal question without being structurally open to continuation.

Question 3

Does a Perec Test film need a happy or conclusive ending?

Accepted Answer

No. A closed ending does not require narrative certainty or moral resolution — ambiguity is permitted. What matters is that the story feels complete on its own terms rather than deliberately left open for a sequel.

Question 4

Why 105 minutes?

Accepted Answer

105 minutes (1 hour 45) is the Perec Test's constraint on runtime — a marker of clarity of vision. The premise: a film that can tell its complete story in 105 minutes or less knows what it wants to say and says it without excess.

Question 5

Where can I watch the films, and how often is the collection updated?

Accepted Answer

Each film lists its Swedish streaming availability across Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, HBO Max, TV4 Play, Viaplay, SVT Play. The curated collection is refreshed automatically every Friday.
